COLUMBUS, OH (WLIO) – Governor Mike DeWine is urging the general assembly to adopt rules about the sale of marijuana to adults in Ohio. In November, voters passed State Issue 2 which allows adults over 21 years old to smoke, possess small amounts, and grow marijuana. But as of right now, there is no legal way to buy it in Ohio. So, DeWine says that lawmakers need to pick up the issue that they couldn’t get passed before they went home for Christmas break.
“They can use Marijuana. They can possess Marijuana. They can even plant marijuana, and grow it. But they can’t buy the seeds, or they can’t legally buy the marijuana,” says DeWine. “So, again we are just going to continue to see the black market will develop. Every day that goes on. It’s more likely we will have a robust black market.”
DeWine is also calling on lawmakers to ban the sale of intoxicating hemp products. The products contain less than half of a percent of THC, which is the chemical in marijuana and hemp that causes intoxication. But marijuana’s THC levels are around 30 percent but DeWine wants to limit this access to protect children and adults.
“These hemp products can be sold anywhere in the state of Ohio, and we have no jurisdiction. We have no laws to prohibit that” adds DeWine. “We could do absolutely nothing. Local law enforcement could do nothing, the state could do nothing to stop it.”
The Ohio House and Senate are set to return to work the week of January 8th.
